Question: What is a Relay?

This question relates to category goMail SMTP Mail Server

Answer:

Usage for the goMail SMTP Server is counted on a per relay basis. A "relay" is the equivalent of 1 message sent to 1 recipient. The standard service allows up to 100 relays per account per day.

How are Relays Counted?
For messages less than 10MB in total size, one "relay" is counted for each recipient of a message you send. That is, one message, sent to 50 recipients, counts as 50 "relays." 50 different messages, each sent to only one recipient, also counts as 50 "relays."

goMail SMTP Server supports messages up to 50MB. The relays counted for messages 10MB and larger are multiplied, based on the size of the message, according to the table below:
Message Size
Multiplier
10MB - <20MB
2
20MB - <30MB
3
30MB - <40MB
4
40MB - <50MB
5
50MB
6

So, for example, for a message of 14MB, we'd have a multiplier of 2, so the relays would be counted double. A message of 25MB, the multiplier is 3, so relays used are tripled.

These calculations are made automatically by our system, and it will not let you send a message if it is too big for the number of recipients you are sending to, combined with your remaining recipients for the day.
